Diagnose and Prevent Problems Storage Tank Problems with NDT

When storing fuel, it’s imperative to regularly test the tank and associated pipework to check its integrity. If left unmonitored, it can lead to an accidental oil spill which would have a significant negative effect on both the environment and your operations. Our non-destructive testing (NDT) service is performed within all current standards and guidance without causing damage or requiring operational downtime. This allows us to quickly identify any areas of degradation, weakness, cracking, corrosion and welding defects before any further damage occurs.

With over 75 years of experience, we provide a complete end-to-end UK wide service, from inspection to repair with our team of expert engineers on hand 24/7 for a quick response.

What is non-destructive testing (NDT)?

Non-destructive testing (NDT), also known as non-destructive examination (NDE) or non-destructive inspection (NDI), is a set of techniques used to evaluate materials without damaging them. It’s the only method to see the current ‘health status’ of a tank using measurement techniques to pinpoint any damage and anomalies in the fuel stored inside.

The HSE recommends that non-destructive testing should be carried out every 12-18 months.

Common NDT methods include:

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT): measures wall thickness of tanks and pipework to detect thinning or corrosion
  • Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL): identifies corrosion pits or defects under coatings or in inaccessible areas
  • Weld Inspection & Base Plate Testing: checks for cracks, weak welds, faulty joints
  • UAV (Drone) Inspections: visual and thermal imaging inspections for large tanks or difficult-access areas

What are the benefits of NDT testing?

  • Detects problems before they escalate into expensive failures or leaks
  • Minimises downtime to ensure maximum productivity of tanks (since our methods are non-invasive)
  • Offers trend information on deterioration so that predictions can be made
  • Demonstrates operational standards and compliance e.g. EEMUA 159 and API 653
  • Gives you peace of mind that your fuel tank is in sound condition

Our NDT inspection process

  • Initial site assessment: We inspect the tank(s), pipework, environment, access and history
  • Choose the appropriate test(s): Based on assessment, we determine which method is best suited
  • Conduct tests onsite: Using our specialist technicians and equipment, we carry out the testing safely
  • Analysis and reporting: You’ll receive a detailed report including defect locations, the severity, wall loss, weld quality and recommendations
  • Follow up actions: We’ll repair, clean or carry out further monitoring as required. We’ll also advise on inspection intervals

Why choose our non-destructive tests?

  • Fast UK-wide response team that can reach you within hours
  • In-house waste uplift service, full invasive tank cleaning and nationwide oil deliveries to streamline the tank integrity testing process and avoid having to contact multiple parties
  • Qualified specialists to provide advice on storing and handling oils safely
  • Integrity testing to EEMUA 159 Level 2
  • Essential housekeeping for your tank, helping you to avoid the need to replace your tank

NDT FAQs

How often should I have NDT inspections?

Regulatory guidance and best practice typically recommend every 12-18 months, or sooner if tanks are older, exposed to harsh conditions, or there are visible signs of corrosion.

Does NDT require taking tanks out of service?

Not always. Many NDT techniques are non-invasive and can be done while tanks remain in use, depending on configuration and safety considerations.

How long do results take?

After site inspection, we usually deliver full reports within 48–72 hours (depending on scope). Urgent cases can be prioritised.

Will these reports meet my insurance or regulatory requirements?

Yes. We follow recognised standards (EEMUA, API) and provide documentation suitable for regulators, insurers, or audits.
